Being a society, sports committee, or student group committee member is not only an exciting and rewarding opportunity but it can also help you after your university experience. Therefore, we encourage you to consider running for a committee position.
Being a committee member:
- Develops your transferable skills
- Adds valuable experience to your CV
- Gives you the opportunity to gain Enhanced Transcript recognition
- Allows your contribution to be recognised annually during Kings’ Ball and Sports’ Ball events
The Enhanced Transcript is a formal University document that records your University and co-curricular activities (see more information here). It can be shared with employers and postgraduate recruiters, maximising your employability prospects.
Committee Roles:
There are three ‘essential roles’ on every committee - President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Those positions have to be present in every committee; all other committee roles can be created by the activity to best suit their own needs.
President – is the head of the society, sports club, or a student group represents. They have a range of responsibilities from ensuring that goals and objectives of the activity are met to supporting other committee members and chairing meetings.
Secretary – plays a key role in coordinating the committee and staying on top of the administrative tasks in the society, sports club, or a student group. Some responsibilities of the secretary are taking minutes at meetings, circulating relevant paperwork, minutes, and action lists after meetings, and maintaining membership lists and contact details.
Treasurer – plays a key role in dealing with finances, handling money, and ensuring that society, sports club, or a student group knows how to apply for extra grants and financial support.
Other popular committee roles that are not required but are in the majority of committees are
Vice President – is there to support, assist and step in as President if need be. They carry out a range of jobs across different levels of the committee to make sure things are running as smoothly as possible and the President is getting assistance with anything needed.
Social Media Officer - plays a key role in determining the identity and appearance of the activity. They often run social media platforms, promote any activities and fundraisers going on, and can serve as a point of contact between the committee and prospective members.
Events Officer/Social Secretary - plays a key role in the social, fun side of student activities. They are often tasked with planning socials, fundraisers, nights out, and guest speakers, to name a few.
If you are interested in taking on one of these roles, get in touch with the society, sports club or student group.
Committee members are elected at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) near the end of each academic year and at Extraordinary General Meetings (EGMs) throughout the academic year where there is a position to be filled.
Being part of a society, sports club, or student group member is supposed to be a fun and rewarding experience. Therefore, if you have any feedback, questions, or experience any issues or difficulties, we are here to assist you.
