If your vehicle BREAKS DOWN or is involved in an ACCIDENT / VEHICLE COLLISION

  • ASSESS the situation, and remain CALM
  • If possible, MOVE your vehicle to a place of safety,
    • Try to leave the motorway at the nearest exit or by pulling into a service station. If this isn’t possible, move left onto the hard shoulder and stop your car as far to the left as possible with your wheels also turned to the left.
    • Try to stop near an emergency telephone (marked with a orange SOS telephone symbol), these are spaced at approximately one mile intervals along motorway hard shoulders.
  • If it’s safe EXIT your vehicle to a place of safety,
    • You and passengers, exit your vehicle via the left-hand door and get behind a safety barrier where there is one.
    • Keep well away from your vehicle and moving traffic, even if it’s raining, cold or dark.
    • If you are unable to exit your vehicle and get to a safe place, stay in your vehicle with your seatbelts and hazard lights on
  • WARN other traffic,
    • Switch your HAZARD WARNING LIGHTS ON, even during the day. If it’s dark, use side lights and in poor visibility use fog lights.
    • Take your WARNING TRIANGLE and place it 45 metres (147 feet) behind your vehicle, that’s about 60 paces. DO NOT put out a warning triangle on a motorway or dual carriageway, or attempt any repairs because passing traffic may collide with your vehicle.
  • If a VEHICLE FIRE develops, get well away from the vehicle, and call the emergency services.
  • Contact BREAKDOWN RECOVERY SERVICES
    • Arnold Clark Breakdown Recovery on 0141 332 2622
    • Enterprise
      • During office hours call the branch where you rented the vehicle i.e., South Branch 01224 894679 or North branch 01224 690099.

Disabled driver(s)

If you have a disability which prevents you from following the above advice you should

  • Stay in your vehicle
  • Switch on your hazard warning lights sa
  • Display a ‘Help’ sign, or, if you have a car or mobile telephone, contact the emergency services and be prepared to advise them of your location

Where there are INJURIES

  • Where possible, it’s safe and you are trained to do so, give emergency first aid.
  • If required contact emergency services and provide full details of the incident i.e., location and any casualties (on a motorway, use the emergency telephone which allows easy location by the emergency services. If you use a mobile phone, first make sure you have identified your location from the marker posts on the side of the hard shoulder).
  • Move uninjured people away from the vehicles to safety; on a motorway this should, if possible, be well away from the traffic, the hard shoulder and the central reservation.
  • Do not move injured people from their vehicles unless they are in immediate danger from fire or explosion.
  • Do not remove a motorcyclist’s helmet unless it is essential to do so.
  • Stay at the scene until emergency services arrive.

Obstructions

  • If anything falls from your vehicle (or any other vehicle) on to the road, stop and retrieve it only if it is safe to do so.
  • On a motorway do not try to remove the obstruction yourself. Stop at the next emergency telephone and call for help.
