Introduction
I am a PGT student, and a MA PIR graduated from University of Aberdeen. I have been part of the University’s Women’s Lacrosse club for the past 7 years as a goalkeeper. I am a BUCS League, Colours and Half Colours winner, a Duke of Edinburgh awarded, and I’ve participated in the SSS Leadership Program.
I have been part of the Sports Committee since my second year. On my third year I became Vice-Chair. Concurrently, I had to take some of the responsibilities from the Vice President. Therefore, due to my experience, I am qualified to assume the responsibilities of the position.
I have practiced more than a dozen sports in my life, however I am also passionate about art, music, literature, history, photography, and cinema. Thanks to my family who were the ones who had instilled the love for it. It could be said that I am multifaceted, and that I adapt easily.
What are your three priorities for the year?
- Create a better connection between the Aberdeen and Qatar Campus. Both are the same institution so why not have a liaison with each other. Because right now they are not really related, because students in Aberdeen don not really know much about the other campus and vice versa. The main point of that is to be able to have students joining clubs or societies no matter which campus they are in, and even create a branch of those in Qatar.
- Re-establish the activities committee because this year there had been a lack of involvement and communication between AUSA and the students. The committee will have its proper importance and focus on problem solving, improving the connection between AUSA and the students, and achieving as many goals as we want to.
- I believe that the current presence that student activities have among students in social media is not enough. Therefore, I will work on promoting societies and sports teams among students even more. My ultimate purpose is to approach students with the different activities they can get involved in through the year, without limiting it just to the annual Fayres.
What unique skill/knowledge can you bring to the role to stand out from the other candidates?
I could describe myself as perseverant, focused, disciplined, able to cooperate in a team, and a natural leader. I have acquired these qualities through a lifetime of practicing multiple sports. I am also quick and determinate learner, to prove this I am fluent in 4 languages and I have competent understanding of a 5th one. From my perspective, a vice president must have the before mentioned characteristics.
I am half Spanish and half Scottish, which means I am part of international students community, in which I am very involved. This is substantial because international students represent the 28.8% of the student community as a whole. Therefore, do to my involvement with the student community I have a better perspective of the issues that they may have I can understand the problems they faced.
What do you think is the biggest issue that students are facing at the moment and how do you plan to tackle it?
- Since a lot of students struggle financially I believe that seminars on how to live in a budget would be helpful.
- Considering the current situation on the labour market, I believe students should be encourage to star looking for internships and job experience since their first year.
